Hair clarification: the detox your curls need
Eva Bobrow
Clarifying is a deep cleansing of the scalp and hair that removes all the residue accumulated over time. Even when using silicone-free products, deposits can build up on your hair: minerals from hard water, styling product residue, oxidized sebum, pollution, etc.
These build-ups create a kind of "film" that prevents your hair care products from penetrating properly and weighs down your curls. Clarifying acts like a "reset," allowing you to start fresh and restore your hair's ability to absorb moisture and nutrients.
Signs that your hair needs clarifying
-
Your curls are flat and lack volume.
-
Your products no longer seem to be effective.
-
Your hair takes a very long time to dry
-
You have a "film" or sticky hair feeling
-
Your hair is dull despite the care you give it.
-
Your scalp is itchy or you have dandruff.
-
Your loops are no longer being defined correctly.
The different methods of clarification
Clarifying shampoo
This is the most common and effective method. A clarifying shampoo contains stronger cleansing agents than a regular, gentle shampoo, capable of removing stubborn buildup. Ideally, choose a clarifying shampoo without harsh sulfates to avoid stripping your hair too much.
Rinsing with apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a natural clarifying agent that helps remove residue while closing the hair cuticles. Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a liter of water and use as a final rinse after shampooing. This method is gentler but less effective on heavy buildup.
Clay
Green or white clay has absorbent properties that attract impurities. Prepare a paste with clay and water, apply to the scalp and lengths of your hair, leave on for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse and shampoo as usual.
Baking soda
Baking soda is a powerful clarifying agent, but use it with caution as it can disrupt the scalp's pH balance. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with your usual shampoo and massage gently. This method should be reserved for cases of significant buildup and should not be used regularly.
How to properly clarify curly hair
Here are the steps to follow for effective and risk-free clarification:
-
Wet your hair thoroughly
-
Apply your clarifying treatment to your scalp and massage.
-
Leave on for 2 to 5 minutes
-
Rinse thoroughly
-
Always follow with a deep conditioning treatment
This last point is crucial: clarifying removes residue but also some of your hair's natural moisture. A mask or deep conditioning treatment after clarifying allows you to immediately rehydrate and prevent your hair from drying out.
How often should clarification be done?
The frequency of clarifying your hair depends on several factors: the hardness of your water, the amount of products you use, your level of exposure to pollution, etc. Generally, clarifying once a month is sufficient for most people. If you use a lot of styling products or live in an area with very hard water, you can increase the frequency to every two weeks.
Be careful not to over-clarify either: too frequent clarifying can weaken your hair and disrupt the balance of your scalp.
