  • Curly hair routine: where to start when you're a beginner?

Do you dream of defined, bouncy, and easy-to-style curls? The key lies in a routine tailored to your curly hair. Discover the 3 essential pillars, the must-have steps, and all our expert tips to transform your curls.

Why do curly hairs need a specific routine?

Curly hair has very different needs than straight hair. Its spiral structure prevents natural sebum from being evenly distributed along the hair shaft, making it naturally drier and more fragile. Furthermore, the cuticles of curly hair are more open, making it more porous and more susceptible to external damage.

A suitable routine will therefore focus on three essential pillars: hydration, nutrition, and definition . Understanding these three concepts is the foundation of any successful routine for curly hair.

💡 Good to know: At Studio Boucle Paris , each service begins with a personalized diagnosis to identify the precise needs of your texture and offer you a 100% tailor-made routine.

The three pillars of a curly hair routine

    💧

    Hydration: the foundation of everything

Hydration involves providing your hair with water and moisturizing agents. This is the number one need for curly hair. Well-hydrated hair will be soft, elastic, and form beautiful, defined curls.

✓ Key ingredients: aloe vera, glycerin, honey, hyaluronic acid.

    🥑

    Nutrition: Sealing in hydration

Nourishing your hair involves providing it with oils and fats. These lipids create a protective film that prevents moisture from evaporating. Be careful not to overload your hair, especially if it's fine.

✓ Key ingredients: avocado oil, argan oil, jojoba oil, shea butter.

    The definition: to format

The definition involves using styling products that help your curls maintain their shape. Styling gels, mousses, and creams contain film-forming agents that hold the curl in place.

✓ Key products: gels, mousses, styling creams.

Discover our selection of products carefully chosen to meet these three essential pillars.

A simple routine to get started

When you're starting out, it's important not to overcomplicate things. Here's a basic four-step routine that you can adapt over time to suit your hair's needs.

    1. Shampooing (1 to 2 times per week)

Choose a gentle shampoo without harsh sulfates . Apply it only to your scalp and gently massage with your fingertips to loosen impurities. Let the product glide through the lengths of your hair as you rinse, without rubbing. Curly hair generally doesn't need to be washed every day; once or twice a week is sufficient for most textures.

    2. Conditioner (with every wash)

Apply your conditioner generously to the lengths and ends of your hair. Now is the time to detangle your hair with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, always working from the ends to the roots. Leave it on for 2 to 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. For extra hydration, you can leave a small amount of conditioner in.

    3. Leave-in conditioner (on wet hair)

On towel-dried but still damp hair, apply a leave-in conditioner . This product will retain moisture in your hair and make styling easier. Distribute it evenly using the "praying hands" technique: place your hands on either side of a section of hair and smooth it downwards.

    4. Styling product (on wet hair)

Apply your styling gel or cream using the "scrunching" technique: take lengths of hair in your hands and gently squeeze them upwards towards your scalp. This encourages curl formation. Let your hair air dry or use a diffuser on a low heat setting.

    Our Curly Tips: professional tips!

    • Apply your products to very wet hair for better distribution.
    • Don't hesitate to use generous amounts, especially for conditioner.
    • Test different application techniques to find the one that works best.
    • Patience is key: let your hair dry undisturbed without touching it.

    Additional care for perfect curls

The deep cleansing mask (once a week)

Once a week, replace your conditioner with a deep conditioning mask . Apply it to clean, damp hair, leave it on for 15 to 30 minutes under a hair cap (or longer for very dry hair), then rinse. The mask provides an intensive dose of hydration and nourishment.

    Clarification (once a month)

Even with silicone-free products, residue can build up on your hair over time. Using a clarifying shampoo once a month helps to reset your hair, leaving it feeling light and receptive to treatments. Always follow clarifying with a deep conditioning treatment to rehydrate.

    Beginner mistakes to absolutely avoid

When starting your hair transition or discovering the Curly Girl Method, it's easy to make certain mistakes that can hinder your progress. Here are the most common pitfalls to avoid:

    ❌ The 5 fatal mistakes...

    • Using products with silicones and sulfates : they dry out and weigh down curls in the long run
    • Brushing dry hair breaks the curls and creates unmanageable frizz.
    • Touching your hair while it's drying : leave it alone to avoid frizz.
    • Use a towel : opt for a cotton t-shirt or microfiber to protect your curls.
    • Trying to go too fast : give your hair time to adapt to its new routine.

Adapt your routine to your curl type

Not all curls are created equal, and your routine will need to be adapted to your specific texture . Here's how to adjust your routine according to your hair type:

    Wavy hair (Type 2)

Wavy hair needs lightweight products to avoid being weighed down. Opt for light mousses and gels rather than thick creams. Avoid heavy oils that can flatten your waves.

    Curly hair (Type 3)

Curly hair will appreciate a balance between hydration and hold . You can use defining creams combined with a gel to keep your curls in place. Leave-in conditioners are your best friends!

Curly to kinky hair (Type 4)

Curly to coily hair will require richer, more moisturizing care . Don't be afraid of creams, serums, and gels. The LOC (Liquid, Oil, Cream) or LCO method works particularly well on these textures.

    💡 Porosity: a key factor!

    • Low porosity : Lightweight products applied to very wet hair, heat to promote penetration
    • Medium porosity : The ideal texture! Most products work well
    • High porosity : Rich products, sealing techniques (oils, butters), proteins to strengthen.

Don't know your curl type or porosity? Our experts at Studio Boucle Paris perform a complete diagnosis during each service to precisely identify your needs.
